High School Essay Competition

Each year, the attorneys at Grimes Teich Anderson, LLP, will select a legal topic relating to social justice. The topics will be complex, open-ended, and encourage creative and critical thinking.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to enter the Grimes Teich Anderson High School Essay Competition, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • High school senior or junior graduating in Spring 2017 or Spring 2018
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Currently attending one of the eligible high schools listed below
  • Follow all of the instructions given in “Essay Submission Rules”
  • Submit your essay by May 5th, 2017
Eligible Schools

Currently, the competition is limited to high school students attending the following schools:

  • Asheville High School (NC)
  • SILSA (NC)
  • Greenville High School (SC)
Award Information

The winning essayist will receive a check in the amount of $250.00.

Essay Submission Rules

The Grimes Teich Anderson Essay Contest is open to all high school juniors and seniors who meet the eligible requirements listed under “Eligibility Criteria.” The topic should be as follows:


The topics will be selected each year by the attorneys at Grimes Teich Anderson. Each year’s topics will be detailed on the Application (see below).

Essay Guideline

The essay should not exceed 3,000 words. All essays will be judged on whether they:

  • State a clear position on the topic,
  • State a motive – why you chose your position and why the reader should care,
  • Demonstrate purposeful and logical structure,
  • Include ample and concrete evidence which is connected to the position,
  • Explain the necessary context for readers not familiar with your position,
  • State the significance of the position, and
  • Are clear and concise.

Eligible high school juniors and seniors should use the Application and follow the guidelines below when formatting their submission:

  • Essays must be less than 3,000 words long
  • All entries must be double-spaced and written in 12-point font
  • Submitted essays should have one-inch top, bottom, and side margins
  • You must complete the “Contact Information” section on page two of the Application for your submission to be eligible
  • Save your essay using the following file name format: lastname_firstname.docx. For example, if your name is John Smith, your file should be saved as Smith_John.docx. Acceptable file formats include: .doc, .docx, and .pdf
  • Once you are sure everything has been formatted correctly and you have included all the required information, send your submission to with the words “High School Essay Competition” in the subject line of the email.

Winners will be contacted via phone. If the winner cannot be reached via phone, their school guidance counselor will be contacted. If neither of these contact attempts are successful, the winner will be notified via mail. Winners are required to submit a recent photo.

Application Deadline and Winner Announcement Dates

All applications must be submitted with the required information by May 5th.

Winners will be announced by May 26th.
