Woman looking in the distance

An NIH study surveyed over 33,000 women ages 35-74 about their hair product use for eleven years to find risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions. The study found that women who frequently use hair relaxing and straightening products may have a higher risk of developing uterine cancer than those who do not.

Black women are the most frequent users of these products and often begin use in their youth. A staggering 60% of women in the current study who used straightening products in the previous year identified as black. Although the study did not find that the link between hair relaxer use and uterine cancer is affected by race, black women are more likely to use these products, making them disproportionately affected.

Are Hair Relaxers Safe?

According to the FDA, most hair relaxing and straightening products release formaldehyde gas into the air during use. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and exposure could cause short- and long-term health issues such as cancer. In addition, the harsh chemicals in hair relaxers could irritate the hair, skin, and eyes.

A common misconception is that hair relaxers marketed as “organic” or “no lye” are safer and pose fewer health risks. Unfortunately, no hair-relaxing product on the market is completely free of harmful chemicals that will permanently straighten textured hair.

What Does Hair Relaxer Do to Your Hair?

Hair relaxers and straightening products penetrate hair using chemicals that break the disulfide bonds found in the cortex layer under the hair cuticle. The cortex layer comprises twisted protein ‘cables’ and is where hair relaxers work. Then, the hair relaxer re-forms the bonds while the hair is held in a straight pattern, loosening the natural curl pattern and straightening the hair.

Can Hair Relaxers Cause Hair Loss?

The hair-relaxing process could weaken the hair, leaving it brittle and more prone to breakage. It could also burn the skin and permanently damage the scalp. Both of these factors could lead to hair thinning and loss.

Awesome firm! Chris Connolly took time to listen and review our situation. He was very honest and upfront about the process and potential outcomes. My daughter’s case has some complexities and Chris explained every detail and possibility. Bottom line, he fought for us and won!!! I would rate them 10 stars if possible.

Needing an attorney was never something I wanted to need, but I did and thanks to Anna H. and Katie G. it was not so overwhelming. Having to deal with a legal issue and having a trusted attorney is key. I had no idea what to expect during the duration of the time I needed legal representation but Anna and Katie not only keep me well informed but also explained things to me in a way that made sense. If you happen to find yourself in need of legal representation I highly recommend them.
