If Your Exactech Knee or Ankle Replacement is Listed in the Recent Recall, Don’t Wait for Compensation. Contact Us Today.

Thousands of Exactech polyethylene plastic inserts used in knee and ankle replacements have been recalled due to premature device wear and failure, leading to debris production, bone loss, component fatigue, and component cracking or fractures. Some of these conditions may require revision surgery.

Exactech Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Knee and Ankle Polyethylene Inserts fit in between metal components in knee and ankle replacements to cushion joints. The recall impacts tibial inserts and liner components from knee and ankle replacement systems Optetrak, Optetrak Logic, Truliant, and Vantage.

The medical device company recalled these inserts due to out-of-specification packaging issues, not adequately protecting them from oxygen exposure since as early as 2004. Patients have filed lawsuits against Exactech detailing these issues prior to the recall. Still, Exactech failed to warn customers of the problem and continued to market and sell the defective devices.

The FDA has classified this recall as a Class 2 recall, meaning that these products could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues. If you were treated with these polyethylene plastic inserts, here’s what you should know.

Types of Exactech Devices Included in The Recall

Below is a list of recalled Exactech products with their respective recall classes and dates provided by the FDA:

Symptoms of Exactech Knee or Ankle Replacement Failure:

  • New or worsening swelling
  • Pain while walking
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Grinding or other noise
  • Instability
  • Clicking of the knee or ankle

What to Do if A Defective Exactech Insert is in Your Body

If you have experienced any of the above symptoms following a recalled Exactech implant, contact your healthcare provider for an evaluation and consult with a defective medical device attorney as soon as possible.

Exactech has set up a website for US Exactech Recall Information and provides instructions on how to make a claim for reimbursement for out-of-pocket damages related to the recalled devices. Still, you must be cautious; hiring a defective device attorney is critical to ensure that you receive the full scope of compensation for any injuries, damages, and pain and suffering.
