If you are experiencing gallbladder complications after taking Ozempic, you may be entitled to compensation.

The recent Ozempic lawsuit claims that the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, did not give proper notification about the risk of gallstones and gallbladder disease. If You or a Loved One is Taking or Debating Taking Ozempic, Here is What You Need to Know.

You likely may have heard about the controversial drug Ozempic used to treat type 2 diabetes and its off-label use for weight loss, but did you know about its dangerous health risks?

While Ozempic surged in popularity as a weight loss drug, it was not approved by the FDA for weight loss and can cause inflammation and serious damage to the gallbladder. Our lawyers are actively assisting people who have taken Ozempic and suffered adverse effects. If you have questions about filing a claim, contact us today by calling 800-533-6845 or submitting a free case evaluation form online today.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic, or semaglutide, is an injection medication for type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide is classified as a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA). GLP-1 RAs cause the body to release more insulin and reduce glucose in people with diabetes. However, GLP-1 in higher dosages has been shown to suppress appetite, which can promote weight loss.

Why is Ozempic So Popular?

Ozempic (semaglutide) has gained popularity for several reasons. Here are some key factors that have contributed to its popularity:

  • Efficacy in blood sugar control. Ozempic is highly effective in lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Studies have demonstrated that Ozempic can help improve glycemic control, reduce HbA1c levels (a marker of long-term blood sugar control), and lower post-meal spikes in blood sugar.
  • Once-weekly dosage. Ozempic is administered as a once-weekly injection, which is more convenient for many patients compared to other diabetes medications that require daily dosing. The less frequent dosing schedule can improve medication adherence and patient satisfaction.
  • Weight loss benefits. Many people with type 2 diabetes struggle with weight management, and weight loss can improve insulin sensitivity and overall diabetes control. Ozempic has been associated with significant weight loss in some patients. This additional benefit is particularly appealing to both patients and healthcare providers.
  • Cardiovascular benefits. Clinical trials have shown Ozempic has cardiovascular benefits. It’s been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke in people with type 2 diabetes who have a high cardiovascular risk.
  • Positive patient feedback. Positive experiences and testimonials from patients who have used Ozempic have helped spread its popularity. Many patients report significant improvements in blood sugar control, weight loss, and overall well-being while using the medication.
  • Marketing and awareness. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, has executed extensive marketing campaigns to raise awareness about the medication and its benefits. As a result, both patients and healthcare providers have become more familiar with Ozempic as a treatment option.
  • Physician recommendations. Healthcare providers often recommend Ozempic based on its efficacy, once-weekly dosing convenience, and the potential for weight loss and cardiovascular benefits. Positive word-of-mouth from satisfied patients can also lead to increased physician recommendations.
Gallbladder pain from taking ozempic

Side Effects of Ozempic

  • Nausea
  • Stomach Pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Inflammation of the Pancreas (Pancreatitis)
  • Changes in Vision
  • Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)
  • Kidney Problems (Kidney Failure)
  • Serious Allergic Reactions
  • Gallbladder Problems

Does Ozempic Cause Malnourishment?

In addition to the side effects listed above, Ozempic has been linked to malnourishment due to its appetite-suppressing effects. This serious health condition occurs when the body does not receive the nutrients it needs to function appropriately. Malnourishment, or malnutrition, could also lead to other health complications, such as muscle wasting and a weakened immune system. This could drastically impact a user’s health and well-being.

Does Ozempic Cause Gallbladder Issues?

Clinical trials, including that of Novo Nordisk, showed that Ozempic could double the risk of acute gallbladder disease in its users. In the trials, 1.6% of semaglutide patients developed gallstones (cholelithiasis), compared to 0.7% of placebo patients. In addition, gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) was noted in 0.6% of semaglutide patients compared to 0.2% of placebo patients.

Since 2016, multiple scientific journals have established a connection between Ozempic and acute gallbladder disease. The initial study in 2016 compared patients using medications such as semaglutide (GLP-1 analogues) to those using a different type of diabetes treatment (DPP-4 inhibitors). While DPP-4 inhibitors showed no association with gallbladder disease, the use of GLP-1 analogues, including Ozempic, was found to increase the risk by 79%. Another study in 2017 reported a 30% increased risk of gallstones, specifically among users of drugs like Ozempic, and a study in 2020 indicated a 28% increased risk.

Later, a meta-analysis published in 2022 analyzed clinical trial data from various GLP-1 drug trials, revealing even higher risks. Overall, patients on these medications had a 37% increased risk of gallbladder disease, a 27% increased risk of gallstones, and a 36% increased risk of gallbladder inflammation.

Notably, patients taking these drugs for weight loss rather than diabetes faced a 129% increased risk of gallbladder disease.

Should I Take Ozempic?

A qualified healthcare professional can help determine whether you should take Ozempic (semaglutide) or any other medication after a thorough evaluation of your medical history, current health condition, and individual needs.

Ozempic is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, and healthcare providers typically prescribe it to help manage blood sugar levels in people with this condition. However, the decision to start Ozempic or any other medication depends on various factors, such as:

  1. Your specific type 2 diabetes diagnosis and current diabetes management plan
  2. Other medical conditions you may have
  3. Your response to other diabetes medications you have tried
  4. Potential interactions with other medications you are currently taking
  5. Your overall health status and any relevant medical history
  6. Your lifestyle and preferences

If you are considering starting Ozempic or any new medication, discussing it with your healthcare provider is essential. They can assess your situation and provide personalized recommendations based on their medical expertise. They will consider the potential benefits, risks, and side effects associated with the medication and ensure that it aligns with your overall treatment plan.

Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions and guidance regarding medication use. If you have any questions or concerns about Ozempic or your diabetes management, don't hesitate to consult with your healthcare professional for the most appropriate and personalized advice.

What’s the Difference Between Wegovy and Ozempic?

Ozempic and Wegovy are both injectable drugs containing the same active ingredient, semaglutide. In addition, they are both GLP-1s or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor antagonists. The main difference between the two drugs is the amount of semaglutide, and what they have been approved for by the FDA.

Ozempic is approved for treating type 2 diabetes in adults to help improve blood sugar control. It is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise when other diabetes medications alone do not provide adequate glycemic control.

Wegovy is a higher-dose formulation of semaglutide, approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight individuals with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia). Wegovy is used to help with weight loss rather than primarily focusing on blood sugar control, like Ozempic.

The usual starting dose of Ozempic for type 2 diabetes is 0.25 mg once a week, and after at least four weeks, it is increased to the maintenance dose of 0.5 mg once a week. In some cases, the dose may be further increased to 1 mg once a week, depending on individual response and tolerability.

Wegovy's recommended weight management dose is 2.4 mg once a week. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection, just like Ozempic, but at a higher dose tailored for weight loss.

How Does Ozempic Work?

Ozempic (semaglutide) is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, acting similarly to the GLP-1 hormone produced naturally in the gut. Here are several ways Ozempic works to help manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes:

GLP-1 receptor activation. When you eat a meal, your body releases GLP-1 from specialized cells in the intestines. GLP-1 plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism in two ways:

  • Insulin Release: One of the primary functions of GLP-1 is stimulating the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin is a hormone that facilitates glucose uptake from the bloodstream into cells, which are used for energy. By increasing insulin secretion, GLP-1 helps lower elevated blood sugar levels after a meal.
  • Glucagon Suppression: GLP-1 also reduces the release of another hormone called glucagon from the pancreas. Glucagon has the opposite effect of insulin; it increases blood sugar levels by causing the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream. By inhibiting glucagon release, GLP-1 helps prevent excessive spikes in blood sugar.

Slowing gastric emptying. Ozempic also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties its contents into the small intestine. This effect is called delayed gastric emptying. When food stays in the stomach for a more extended period, glucose absorption into the bloodstream is slowed, leading to a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels after meals. This can help prevent post-meal spikes in glucose levels.

Appetite regulation and weight loss. Ozempic acts on the appetite centers in the brain. By binding to GLP-1 receptors in the hypothalamus, Ozempic reduces feelings of hunger and increases feelings of fullness, which can lead to decreased food intake and, in some individuals, weight loss. Weight loss can benefit people with type 2 diabetes, as it often improves insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.

Insulin sensitivity improvement. Besides stimulating insulin secretion, GLP-1 receptor agonists also improve the sensitivity of the body's cells to insulin. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes, where cells become less responsive to insulin's actions. By enhancing insulin sensitivity, Ozempic helps the body use insulin more effectively, allowing glucose to enter cells more efficiently.

Ozempic is typically administered as a once-weekly injection, which provides sustained GLP-1 receptor activation and blood sugar control throughout the week. It's important to note that while Ozempic can be very effective in managing blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes, it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and other diabetes management strategies.
