Testosterone Replacement Therapy Lawyers

Have You Or Someone You Loved Suffered Severe Medical Issues After Using Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)? We're Here To Help.

Millions of men use testosterone therapy on a daily basis, mainly because it has been linked to and promoted for strengthening a sluggish libido or increasing overall energy levels. Although testosterone replacement therapy prescriptions for older men have skyrocketed in recent years, the FDA has cautioned that testosterone therapy should only be used by men with low testosterone concentrations caused by hypogonadism and not those with age-related low testosterone. The number of litigation inquiries is on the rise as a result of research connecting testosterone use to heart attacks and other potentially adverse side effects such as pulmonary embolus and blood clots. Many of the men taking these drugs did not have a legitimate need for them and may not have been aware of the risks.

The lawyers at Grimes Teich Anderson are representing testosterone replacement therapy users who have been injured by these products. If you or someone you care about has suffered a heart attack, stroke, embolisms, or even death after using TRT, we may be able to help.

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a hormone replacement therapy for men that is used to help them deal with low testosterone levels. Men's bodies generate less testosterone as they age, resulting in reduced libido, energy, erectile dysfunction, and other natural occurrences. Hypogonadism is a disorder in which the body produces an abnormally small amount of testosterone and is typically treated with Testosterone Replacement Therapy. The majority of TRT products are topical gels or creams that are applied to the back, limbs, and shoulders of men. Some testosterone replacement drugs come in the form of injections, tablets, or patches.

Many groups, however, have expressed concern about the aggressive marketing strategies utilized by the manufacturers of TRT drugs. These manufacturers have been accused of failing to alert physicians and patients about the correlation between their products and an increased risk of serious side effects. Plaintiffs also assert that the drug companies advertised their drugs for off-label uses that the FDA had not approved, such as exhaustion and low sex drive. Some of the specific testosterone replacement therapy products that plaintiffs have named in litigation include Androderm, Androgel, Axiron, Depo-Testosterone (cypionate), Bio-T-Gel, Delatestryl (enanthate), Fortesta, Striant, Testim, Testopel, and Aveed.

The Potentially Fatal Side Effects of TRT

What many men using these TRT drugs were unaware of, however, is that they can severely harm them – and even cause death. Health associations and medical journals have published studies highlighting the association between TRT and an increased risk of developing potentially fatal conditions.

Two studies published in January 2014 made headlines when they linked testosterone replacement therapy to heart attacks and other cardiac complications. The first was published in November 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It looked at 60-year-old men who were all having coronary angiography done to examine their hearts. It found a correlation between testosterone treatment and an increased risk of:

  • Stroke
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Heart attack
  • Arrhythmia
  • Transient ischemic attacks
  • Death

In January of 2014, the second study was published in PLOS One and included 56,000 men. In this study, testosterone replacement therapy was discovered to:

  • Double the risk of a heart attack in men 65 and older
  • Double, and in some instances even triple, the risk of heart attack in younger men with pre-existing heart conditions

If you or a loved one are a current or former user of any of these products and have recently suffered a heart attack or stroke, you may be entitled to compensation.
